John Clayton came from Gloucester County to Isle of Wight County, Virginia. Entries in the Register of Abingdon Parish, Gloucester County, record the "baptism of John Clayton, son of John & Elizabeth 2/2/1718; the baptism of "Mary, dau. of John Clayton 12/6/1719; the birth of "Susanna, dau. of John Clayton" 2/28/1722; and the baptism of Rebekah, dau. of John & Eliz. 6/5/1726.
John Clayton's Will was probated 4 Jan 1759 naming sons William, John, George and daughters Elizabeth Miller, Mary Verlines Clayton, and Susannah Williamson. Others named were Rebeckah Miller, daughter of Elizabeth, grandsons John Miller, Robert Pinhorn Miller and Benjamin Miller; sons-in-law Twait Verlines Miller and Thomas Miller.

Previously we questioned if Elizabeth had married John Hanes in 1813. We're told this is not the case, but we still don't know who the parents of John's wife were. Can anyone identify this Elizabeth Clayton?

The remaining children in this family were added on December 9, 2003, based largely on census records.
Thanks to Martha Kapp for her diligent research efforts and for sharing her information. Credit also goes to Don Fox, who is a descendant of Henry Thomas Clayton who got information of the Moravian Archives.
