1753 - Amelia Co., Va. - Jacob is on the tax list in John Nash's District, Nottaway Parish paying one poll. Reuben Stanley is also on this tax list. The taxable age in Virginia is age 16, placing his birth as born 1737 or before. This area is in Nottoway Parish below the Cellar Creek. The taxable age in Virginia during this time period is age 16, placing Jacob's birth as born 1737 or before.

1755 - Albemarle Co., Va. - Jacob is on the tax list in Col. Randolph's District paying one poll. Familiar Wilkes Co., NC surnames in this district such as Anderson, Angel, Chambers, Coffey and Moore. Reuben Stanley also on this same tax list but on Obediah Woodson's list. This area is described as below the Buffalo River to the County line.

1766 Jul 21 - Bedford Co., NC - Deed from George Holland to Jacob Stanley for 50 acres south of Staunton [Roanoke] River adjacent George Holland. Witness were William Fuqua, John Eckhols and Merry Carter. This deed was proved on July 22, 1766 and recorded. This land is in present day Franklin Co., Va. On July 22, 1799, John Stanley had 90 acres of land south of Staunton [Roanoke]River surveyed adjacent to Holland's survey. There is not a deed or any evidence of what happened to either of these pieces of land. Franklin County, Va. was created on 1 Jan 1786 from Bedford and Henry Cos., Va.

1767 Jul 27 - Bedford Co., NC - From the court minutes of Bedford Co.,Va. Jeremiah Hatfield and Jacob Stanley being bro.[brought] into Court being charged with rescuing Elizabeth Stanley (she being then in Custody of Sheriff at the recip [receipt] of the church Wardens of Russell in this county) & several witnesses being sworn & examined in consideration hereof it [is] in the opinion of the court they be fined 0 pounds & costs & find Ser. [Service] for their good behavr.[behavior] & kept in custody till they pay the sd.[said] fine or give serv.[service] for payment thereof at laying of next Levy. 9 Russell Parrish is a parish created in Bedford County in 1754 by the Church of England or the Episcopal Church. These taxes were paid in addition to the county taxes. "Tax Lists were accessed by the County Commission. . . . and were separate from the parish levy and had nothing to do with the established church."

1778 - Wilkes Co., NC - Oath of Allegiance signed by Jacob Stanley Sr., Jacob Stanley, Jr., Harris Stanley and John Stanley (and others).

The oath of Allegiance or Affirmation, as the case may be, and can be taken by free Male Persons above Sixteen Years of Age. Jacob along with other Wilkes County inhabitants took this oath in front of Benjamin Hendron who signed this oath. This places the birth of Jacob Sr. in 1762 or before. Jacob died after 1778 -1790 in Wilkes Co., NC. Jacob Sr.'s name is not seen again in Wilkes County.

Jacob Stanley, Jr. (abt. 1741)

1776 Mar - Surry Co., NC - Jacob Stanley and Harris Stanley both served 7 days in the Light Horsemen. Capt. William Shepherd for the Services of 9 Companies of Lt. Horse on an Expedition intended to Wilmington. They were both paid 2 pounds, 9 shillings and 6 pence.

1778 – Oath of Allegiance The oath was taken by males age 16 years and older to show their allegiance to the Patriots during the American Revolution. The oath in Wilkes County, NC was found at the North Carolina State Archives in a folder marked “Oaths” in Wilkes County Loose Papers, Box 6, Series 104-928. Memorandon of Disaffected People and Delinquints to wit – Return of Delinquints H. Benj. Herndon Esq. Do [which see] for Jos. Herndon & Jno. Walker Esqr.:I, A.B., will bear faithful and true Allegiance to the State of North Carolina, and will truly endeavor to support, maintain, and defend the independent Government thereof, against George the Third, King of Great Britain, and his Successors, and the Attempts of any other Person, Prince, Power, State or Potentate, who by secret Arts, Treasons, Conspiracies, or by open Force, shall attempt to subvert the same, and will in every Respect conduct myself as a peaceful orderly Subject; and that I will disclose And make known to the Governor, some Member of the Council of State, or some Justice of the Superior Courts or of the Peace, all Treasons, Conspiracies, and Attempts, committed or intended against the State, which shall come to my knowledge. -- Wm. 1780 Mar 6 - Burke Co., NC - Jacob is a chain carrier along with Benjamin Adkins on NC Land Grant #861 for 200 acres on John's River patented to John Moore on 9 Nov 1784 adjoining Benjamin Adkins and William Fletcher. Surveyed by Christopher Beckman.

1789 Aug 15 - Morgan Dist.(Wilkes or Burke Co., NC) - Jacob Jr. is indebted to the state for 20 pounds to be void if he attends next court and gives evidence for the state against Demsey Sutton and others. (The author speculates that Jacob Sr. died and his son Jacob Jr. moved out of Wilkes County in the direction of Tenn. Descendants of Jacob's line are in Anderson Co.,Tenn. Anderson Co.,Tenn. was formed in 1806 from Campbell Co.,Tenn. White polls were taxed between the ages of 21 and 50 years. A tax list for Anderson Co.,Tenn. taken on June 16, 1802 shows the following Stanleys: Harris Stanley one poll, Reuben Stanley one poll and Page Stanley one poll. All three men born 1781 or before.)

1778 Jul 4 - Wilkes Co., NC - Wilkes Land Entry #237 - Reuben Stanley entered 200 acres of land on Hunting Creek at the foot of Lazy Hill including his improvement said Stanley now lives on. 1780 Feb 25 - Wilkes Co., NC - Wilkes Entry #1645 made by Reuben Stanley for 100 acres at James Love's line as to ascertain the various land between John Stanley's line and Thomas Tomson's line. 20 [Reuben transferred this entry to William Combs on 28 Feb 1785.]

1780 Apr 10- Wilkes Co., NC - Reuben and Jacob Stanleys are chain carriers for the survey of James Love's land entries #237 and #1338.

1784 - Wilkes Co., NC - Reuben is on the tax list paying on 50 acres and 3 polls. This 50 acres is land on Kings Creek that Reuben purchased from Gersham Allen. He is paying a poll for himself and on 2 other 21 year old men. John and Jacob Stanley are also on this tax list.

1784 Mar 2 - Burke Co., NC - Jacob and Reuben are named in a supoena from Burke Co., NC to the sheriff of Wilkes Co.,NC to testify on behalf of David Baker, plantiff vs. Joseph White defendant. David Baker is a neighbor to Joseph and Rickles Stanley in Burke Co., NC.

1785 - Wilkes Co., NC - Reuben is on the tax list paying 2 polls and 100 acres of land. Jacob Stanley is also on this list.

1785 Sept 7 - Wilkes Co. (now Caldwell Co.), NC - Deed, Reuben Stanley bought 50 acres on King's Creek from Gersham Allen for 100 pounds. Witnesses were JACOB Stanley and Richard Green. This deed was proved Jan Term 1786 by JACOB Stanley.

1776 - Wilkes Co., NC - Reuben is on the tax list in Nathaniel Gordon's District paying on 100 acres of land and 2 polls. Jacob Stanley also on this list.

1786 Nov 14 - Deed, Reuben purchased land 106 1/4 acres on Hunting Creek on from James Love Jr. for 100 pounds on Hunting Creek adjacent Osborn Keeling. Witnesses were Jo.[Joseph] Winston and Wm.[William] Sharpe. Deed proved in January 1787 by William Sharp.

1775 - Surry Co.(now Wilkes Co.), NC - John is on the tax list in John Hudspeth's Tax District. John is paying 1 poll and this places his birth at 1759 or before. Also on this list are John Howard married Elizabeth Stanley, sister of John Stanley in Goochland Co.,Va. in 1765, & Joshua Howard his son and Peter Holland [son of George Holland] - 3 polls.

1778 - Wilkes Co., NC - John took the oath of allegiance with his son Harris, and his father Jacob, Sr. and his brother Jacob Jr.

1778 Aug 8 - Wilkes Co., NC - Land Entry #279 - John Stanley enters 200 acres on Hunting Creek beginning at the fork of said mill creek and running up both forks including his improvement for compliment. This is John Stanley born ca 1738 as he is the only John that shows on tax lists in Wilkes County to this point. A different Entry Date is shown on the NC land Grant #702, land entry #279, of 8 Feb 1780. This land adjoined James Love [sold to Evan Bell], Job Cole [sold to Archibald Lovelace] and William Combs [sold to Benjamin Crabtree].

1779 Feb 11 - Wilkes Co., NC - Land Entry #828 - Stephen Harris enters 100 acres south fork of Hunting Creek conditional line JOHN Stanley including HARRIS Stanley's plantation. (Search in the NC Wilkes County land grants at the NC Archives did not show any land grants for Stephen Harris. However, NC Wilkes Co. Land Grant #647, Land Entry #818 dated 6 Oct 1784 for George Combs has this same description for land. The warrant for this land entry dated 6 Oct 1784 shows that Stephen Harris's name is marked out and George Comb's name is written in.)

1779 Mar 4 - Wilkes Co.,NC - Land Entry #918 - Stephen Harris enters 50 acres on South Fork of Hunting Creek at JOHN Stanley's line down both sides. Stephen Harris transferred this entry to Job Cole on 3 Jan 1781.

1780 Feb 18 - Wilkes Co., NC - Land Entry #1632 - John Stanley entered 100 acres on Mill Creek at said [John] STANLEY's other line up creek on both sides. John transferred this land entry to George Combs on 12 Sept 1785. George Combs received NC Wilkes Land Grant #842 for this property. The entry number #1632 must be a duplicate land entry number as there is NC State Grant for John Stanley for this entry number.The description of the warrant in John Standleys entry #1632 is "one hundred acres of land lying in the county aforesaid lying on the Mill Creek Beginning at sd. Standleys other line and & run up the sd creek on both sides for compliment". John Stanley received NC Land Grant #730a for this 100 acres of land. John Stanley did not register either of his land grants with the Wilkes County, NC Register of Deeds office.

1780 Feb 25 - Wilkes Co, NC - Land Entry #1645 - REUBEN Stanley enters 100 acres on south side of Hunting Creek at James Love's line to ascertain various land between JOHN STANLEYs line and Thomas Tomson's line. On 28 Feb 1785, Reuben Stanley transferred this entry to William Combs. Reuben Stanley has made entries on the land to the east of John Stanley which he transferred to James Love, and to the west of John which he transferred to William Combs, all adjacent to John Stanley.

1780 Mar 20 - Wilkes Co., NC - Land Entry # 1737 - Job Cole enters 50 acres on Mirey Branch Hunting Creek between road goes from Thomas Tomsons to JOHN STANDLEYS. On 4 Apr 1785, Job Cole transferred this land entry to William Combs. William Johnson was a witness to this transaction. This note is written on the grant. Job Cole received NC Wilkes Co. Land Grant #638 for this property.

1782 - Wilkes Co., NC - John is in Alexander Gordon's tax district and is the only Stanley on this tax list showing 400 acres of land valued at 25 pounds, 2 horses/mules valued at 11 pounds and 5 cattle valued at 5 pounds. The 400 acres that John is paying taxes on his land entry #279 of 200 acres on Hunting Creek, land entry #1632 of 100 acres on Hunting Creek and a duplicate land entry #1632 of 100 acres on Hunting Creek.

1785 Apr 5 - Wilkes Co., NC - John's land entries #279 and #1632 were both surveyed today. The chain carriers were Thomas and William Combs.

1785 Jul 26 - Wilkes Co., NC -Road Order- It is ordered that the following jury view the road where Crane's Path leaves the Waggon Road the best way near Grassy Nobs: Daniel Holeman [bought Reuben Standleys 100 acres on Hunting Creek], Alexander Morrison, Benjamin Crabtree [bought land from William Combs], George Combs [lives next door to John], William Combs [lives next door to John], JOHN Stanley, Bennitt Roberts, William Lewis, James Young, James Love [next door neighbor to John Stanley], James Fletcher, James Reynolds, William Morrison, Michael Souther, and Leonard Keeling.

1786 -Wilkes Co., NC - John is taxed in Alexander Gordon's District in 1786 and is paying 1 poll and 300 acres of land. This 300 acres are his 200 and 100 acre land grants. Harris Stanley also shows in this tax district paying one poll. This is the first time that Harris shows on a tax list. This places the birth of Harris Stanley at 1765 or before.

1786 Oct 26 - Wilkes County, NC John is in the P's and Q's as being double taxed "Ordered Baswell Baker, JOHN STANLEY, John Hersey, William Nance, James Paris, Peter Guinn & John Gortney be doubled taxed for failing to give in acct of taxable property, supposing each to have 1 poll." John did not pay his taxes in 1785 and now has to pay "double" on his taxes.

1787 - Wilkes Co.,NC - John is on the NC State Census in Nathaniel Gordon's District [Nathaniel and Alexander's districts are combined for census]. John is showing 1 male age 21-60 year [John Sr], 2 white males under 21 and above 60 and 6 females. Jacob Stanley is also in this district. This census shows John's birth as being born between 1727-1766.

1787 - Wilkes Co., NC - John is on the tax list in Nathaniel Gordon's District paying on 100 acres and one poll. This is his father's, Reuben's land, the 106 1/2 acres on Hunting Creek.

1789 - Wilkes Co.,NC - John is on the tax list in Nathaniel Gordons Tax District paying 200 acres and two polls as he did not pay in 1788, so he was doubled taxed in 1789. He actually paid 100 acres and one poll for 1788 and 100 acres and one poll for 1789. Thomas Stanley also on this list.

1805 Feb 4 - Wilkes Co., NC - Deed, Jesse and Joel Stanley sell 100 acres of land to John Stanley on Souther's Mountain [Jacob Stanley's property] for $40.00. Witnesses: Leonard Mulling and Samuel Anderson. Feb 1808-Samuel Anderson proved the deed from Joel and Jesse Stanley to John Stanley for 100 acres.

1805 Jul 26 - Wilkes Co., NC - Deed, John Stanley sold 50 acres to Samuel Anderson[John's son in law] for $40.00 on Souther's Mountain. Witnesses were Archibald Lovelave and Shadrack Stanley [John's son] . Feb 1807 Feb - Deed proved from John Stanley to Samuel Anderson by Shadrack Stanley.

1805 Nov 10 -Wilkes Co., NC - Road Order: Road jury to view and lay road from Wilkesborough by Jesse Deese to Iredell County line: Benjamin Martin, James Martin, Elijah Vickas, John Mise, Jesse Deese, Enoch Fletcher, James Smoot, John Keatons, William Gileath Junr., Henry Gilreath, Turner Hampton, Samuel Anderson, JOHN STANLEY, Hix Combs, Alexander Gilreath, Esq, William Gilreath and Thomas Patton.

1806 Nov - Wilkes Co., NC - John Stanley knows along with John Love of a baseborn child born to Rachel Lewis. There was a not a bastardy bond indicating this mother, child or who the father may be.

1807 Dec 18 - Wilkes Co., NC - Deed, John Stanley Sr. sold 50 acres of land on Souther's Mountain[Jacob Stanley's land] to John Love for $65.00. Witnesses were Hilliar Rousseau and Luke Brown.

Feb 1808- Deed from John Stanley Sr. to John Love for 50 acres of Southers Mountain proved by Hiram Rousseau. 68 John Love then sold this land to Samuel Anderson for 75 pounds. Joshua Souther and Randoph Becknell witnesses to this deed.

1810 Dec 10 - Wilkes Co., NC - John was a bondsman for the marriage of Phillip Welch to Elizabeth Hall.

Search in the NC Wilkes County land grants at the NC Archives did show any land grants for Stephen Harris. However, NC Wilkes Co. Land Grant #647, Land Entry #818 dated 6 Oct 1784 for George Combs has this same description for land. The warrant for this land entry dated 6 Oct 1784 shows that Stephen Harris's name is marked out and George Comb's name is written in.

The Standleys were from Wilkes Co.,NC, John Trotter the brother of Judge James Trotter, then an unmarried man, arrived at the same time and lived with the Standleys.

To my beloved son Wriah[Uriah] Stanley I will and bequath the South East quarter of Section thirty three in Township Fifty three of Range Twenty three with its appurtanances. To my Beloved Son Elihu Stanley I will and bequeath the South East quarter of Section Twenty Seven of Township fifty three of Range Twenty three together with its appurtenances. And where as I have made provisions for Dicy Darcy[Dorsey], Larkin Stanley, Lucy Stanley and Hugh Stanley, my children who are deceased, I do not think propper to give their heirs any portion of my remaining Estate but that it be disposed of as above mentioned. And as the the ballance of my Estate which may be left after my death that I have not otherwise disposed of, both real and personal, I will and bequeath to my before mentioned four children to wit James Stanley, Miriam Trotter, Uriah Stanley and Elihu Stanley to be divided equally between them and if It cannot be divided Equally in kind that it be sold and the proceeds divided as above mentioned. 1819 Jun 12 - Wilkes Co.,NC - John Stanley sold 200 acres to Benjamin Lewis on Big Hunting Creek adjoining James Lewis, Cole, and sd STANLEY for 100 pounds. Witnesses were Thomas Mathis, John Lewis and JAMES STANLEY[son of John Stanley. 1819 Aug - Deed proved in open court and recorded on 26 Oct 1819. This is John's father, John Stanleys land entry #279.
