Barrow Family

First Generation

Moses Barrow (1765-1840) reportedly came to North Carolina from Brunswick Co. VA. A number of web pages name his parents as William and Amy or Amey Barrow. His wife Jemima, whose surname we don't know, appears in the 1850 Forsyth Co. census age 83, living with her son Philip, and is listed as born in North Carolina. Moses appears in the 1790 Stokes Co. census with 1 male under 16 and four females. His will, probated Stokes Co. NC in September 1840, names wife Jemima, sons Aaron, Philip and Moses, daughters Elizabeth and Amy, and deceased children Fanny Dobson, William and Charles Barrow and their heirs.

Second Generation

Children of Moses and Jemima Barrow
Elizabeth Barrow m. George Linville
Frances or Fanny (d. before 1840, leaving a son Franklin)) m. Crawford Dobson in 1818
Amy Barrow m. William Hester
Charles Barrow (1803-1830) m. Anna Ziglar in 1820; his father's will mentions his son Charles
William Barrow (d. 1830) m. Betsy Medearis in 1818; his father's will names William's daughters Luiza and Susanna)
Moses Barrow (1801-1877) m. 1) Sallie Warren (1804-1846), 2) Martha _____, maybe widow Lowry?
Aaron Barrow (ca. 1807-?) m. Temperance Barham (ca. 1814-?) in 1831
Philip Barrow (1809-1871) m. Elizabeth Zimmerman (1807-1879)

Contemporary with this generation is John H. Barrow, who appears in the 1850 Forsyth Co. census age 46 with wife Letitia. He is listed as born in Virginia, and isn't mentioned in the will, so probably is not the son of Moses and Jemima. Is he a relative?

Third Generation

Children of Moses Barrow and Sallie Warren
William Barrow (1826-1901) m. 1) Abigail Saunders (1821-1857), 2) Mary J. Burney (1837-1889).
Henry W. Barrow (1828-1905) m. Nannie A. Webster (1843-1920), d/o Benjamin Webster and Nancy Duncan
Charles Barrow (1830-1914)
James E. Barrow (1832-1917) m. Nancy Jane Whicker (1841-1917)
Mary Barrow (1834-1915) m. William M. Medearis
Nancy Barrow (1838-1923) m. Allen Pegram
David Barrow (1839-?)

In 1850, Moses and Martha are living in Forsyth County with all these children except Henry. Also in the household is James G. Lowrey, age 8. Is he Martha's son?

Children of Aaron Barrow and Temperance Barham
Philip H. Barrow (ca. 1832-?)
William F. Barrow (ca. 1836-?)
John C. Barrow (ca. 1838-?)
Rufus W. Barrow (ca. 1841-?)
Nancy Virginia Barrow (1843-1923; d. in Texas) m. Edward Harmon Gilbow
Aaron J. Barrow (ca. 1848-?)

This family disappears from Forsyth Co. before the 1860 census.

Children of Philip Barrow and Elizabeth Zimmernan

James Lindsay Barrow (1836-1862) m. Celesta M. Beck (ca. 1840?), d/o William Beck and Mary Elizabeth Null
Susan Elizabeth Barrow (1839-1880) m. Romulus L. Cox (1834-1924), s/o William Cox and Nancy Leedy
Reuben Aaron Barrow (1841-1923) m. 1) Victoria A. Sanders (1850-1881), 2) Mary Florence Sullivan, d/o Nathan and Grace Sullivan; moved to Hale Co. TX
Philip Barrow was a representative for Forsyth and Stokes counties in the NC state Senate in 1850-1854, and for Forsyth Co. in the NC state Commons in 1860-1862. [from obituary, People's Press]

Philip's will, dated 1866 and probated 1872, names these three children and a grandson Henry R. Barrow. Reuben and Susan's husband Romulus Cox are executors. The abstract of the will published by the FCGS does not indicate that James is deceased, but we think he must be the James L. Barrow buried in the Zimmerman family cemetery in Stanleyville, and that his widow is the Celestia Barrow who married George W. Flynt in 1865. The Flynts do not appear in the Forsyth Co. census in 1870 or 1880, but in 1870 Philip and Elizabeth's household includes Henry Barrow age 9, as well as Romulus and Susan Cox and their daughter Lula, age 2. In 1880, R.A. (Reuben) and "Vic" Barrow are living with Romulus and Susan Cox, as is Henry Barrow age 15, listed as nephew.

Children of John H. Barrow and Lutitia (from 1850 census)
John S. Barrow (ca. 1837-?)
Margaret J. Barrow (ca. 1840-?)
James B. Barrow (ca. 1842-?) m. Charity Stewart
Ann E. Barrow (ca. 1849-?)

Private William H. Barrow died in the battle of Chancellorsville, November 1863. Whose son was he?

George Barrow (1832-1904) is buried at St. Pauls Methodist, Kernersville. His age would appear to place him in this generation, but whose son is he?

And who is Mary Barrow who married Richard Zigler in 1855?

Fourth Generation

Children of William Barrow and Abigail Saunders
John W. Barrow (1856-1857)

Children of William Barrow and Mary J. Burney
Martha Lillian Barrow (1861-1862)
Walter Burney Barrow (1865-1933)
Otelia Barrow (1867-1955)
Mary Barrow (1869?-1961) m. Lewis F. Owen (ca. 1874-1954?)
Pauline Barrow (1878-?)

Mary J. age 6 months appears in the 1870 census, listed as born December 1869. In 1880 her place is taken by Mary, age 5. In 1930 Mary is listed as age 58, Is this the same child?

Children of Henry W. Barrow and Nannie Webster Florence Barrow (1875-1947) apparently didn't marry

Henry and Nannie must have married sometime between 1870 and 1875, but we didn't find a marriage record for them in Forsyth County. In 1880 they are living in Forsyth Co., however, and Nancy Webster age 65 is with them, identified as Henry's mother-in-law. Florence is their only child in 1880, and the only one named in his will.

Children of James E. Barrow and Nancy J. Whicker
Eliza Ann Barrow (1860-1862)
Henry S. Barrow (1861-1930) m. Rachel Victoria Hester (1870-1957), d/o W.H. and Eliza Hester
William Moses Barrow (1864-1923) m. Sallie L. Dwiggins (d. 1928), d/o D.B. and M.J. (Ballard) Dwiggins
Thomas Ruffin Barrow (1865-1952) m. 1) Lucy A. Fulp, d/o Moses and Annie Fulp, in 1889; m. 2) Lillie A. Martin (d. 1919) in 1896
Robert L. Barrow (1867-1945)
Sally Catherine Barrow (1870-1944)
Jasper D. Barrow (1873-1950)
James Monroe Barrow (1876-1953) buried with wife Jessie L. (1883-1956)
Minnie Barrow (1878-1969) m. Horace Combs
Mary Bertha Barrow (1882-1923) apparently didn't marry

Are they also the parents of Gideon Barrow who married Laura A. Medearis in 1893?

Children of James Lindsay Barrow and Celestia Beck
Lelia S. Barrow (1859-1860)
Henry Reuben Barrow (1861-1916) m. 1) ____ Davis, 2) Susan Gertrude Belotte; d. in Spartanburg SC Mary E. Barrow (b. & d. 1862)
The baby Lelia S. appears in the 1860 census with James and Celestia. The Forsyth Co. cemetery records book lists "Lewis S. Barrow" 1859-1860, buried in the Zimmerman family cemetery. We believe that this is the same child. In the same cemetery is listed the baby Mary E., who was born in November 1862 and lived only 11 days, and is probably also the daughter of James and Celestia. The remaining child, Henry R., does not appear in the 1860 census, but is named as a grandson in Philip Barrow's will as indicated above. Lelia Wrightson and Celestia Barrow, daughters of H.R. Barrow, are named as granddaughters in the will of L.F. Davis, November 1909, Forsyth Co.
