Bullard Family

In 1733 a small group of Highland Scots established a colony in the Upper Cape Fear River area. In 1744 Gov. Johnston reported that the Cape Fear Valley was being settled by a "sober and industrious set of people."

In 1761 William Bullard received a land grant from Granville for 250 acres in Johnston County, NC. It was situtated on both sides of Little River in the north-east corner of the county. In 1765 William sold 150 acres of this land to Thomas Bullard of the same county. They were both designated as "planters." Later a John Bullard was witness for land transactions in the same area. William Bullard, Jr. shows up on the same river, and Thomas Bullard and James Bullard are also found in the same area. James Bullard's name also appears on the 1790 Census record.

The James Bullard presented on this page could have been the son of any of the above-mentioned men and he was born in 1768. James and Rachel were living in Johnston Co., NC when their daughter, Zilpha, was born. By 1800 James and Rachel were in Rowan County (now Davidison) North Carolina.

Previously we asked where the following family fits in. Lynn Ester has helped us here. Walter G. Bullard was the son of James F. Bullard of Surry/Yadkin Co. and wife Ada.

Children of Walter Graham Bullard (1815-1897) and Sarah Caroline Vogler (1824-1909), d/o Peter Vogler and Sarah (Sally) Reed)
Sarah Ann Bullard (1843) named as Sarah Watkins in her father's will
Martha J. Bullard (1846)
Louisa R. Bullard (1848)
Nancy Eliza Bullard (1850)
Ella/Elmina Bullard (1850-1882) m. John Lewis Lowder
Is Ella/Elmina really a different child from Nancy Eliza?
Johnathan Wesley Bullard (1853-1935) m. Martha Ophelia Styers (1861-1940), d/o Richard Nathaniel Styers and Delilha Henning
Emily Lare Bullard (1856-1936) m. Samuel Cornelius Robertson (1849-1923)
John William Bullard (1859-1944) m. Ida E. Harper (1863-1947)
Enoch Armenius Bullard (1861-1934) m. Lula Minnie Jones (1874-1931),
d/o Mary Ann Harper and Wesley Calvin Jones

Previously we asked for identification of Ella/Elmina Bullard who married John Lewis Lowder. Walter G. Bullard's will (Forsyth County, 1892; prob. 1897) names Sidney Lowder (son and heir of Lewis and Ella Lowder, dec'd), which suggests that she was his daughter also.
