Goslin or Goslen Family

We have referred to this family as Goslin throughout this page, but have included a number of people for whom Goslen is the predominant spelling in their public records.

First Generation

Ezekiel Goslin is first found in Prince George's County in 1736 when he bought 127-acre part of Discovery for 5 shillings from William and Mary Masters. At that time, he was already married to Elizabeth, daughter of William W. Masters and Mary Veatch. Elisabeth was born in Maryland in 1717. Between 1744 and and 1761 Ezekiel either bought or leased several properties in the Frederick Co., MD area. In his will, dated April 1765, he directed that all of his lands be sold at public vendue and authorized Elizabeth to pay all his debts. In 1772 Elizabeth filed an account of the estate and the value was at 186.16.4 pounds. Included in the disbursements were Ann Smith, Agnes Wilcoxen, Alexander Perry, Daniel Smith, Rebecca Smith, Mary Masters and Ninian Beall.

After Ezekiel's death in 1765, Elizabeth remained in Maryland for sometime. In 1772 she came to Hope NC with her son-in-law Daniel Smith, along with a letter of introduction to Hope from the Rev Joseph Powell of Carroll's Manor, MD. It reads, in part, "her husband was a real happy, blessed man, who before my time lived on the Pattomock but on our coming here this Widdow moved near us on Account of the Gospel." Ezekiel and Elizabeth Goslin had ten children. Elizabeth, along with other members of her family, were members of the first party of Carroll's Manor Moravians to migrate to Wachovia. She died in Hope, March 29, 1802.

First Generation

Children of Ezekiel Goslin (died ca. 1765, MD) and Elizabeth Masters Goslin (1717-1802)
Taffena/Tryphenia/Tabina Goslin (d. bef. 1802) m. Eades (remained in Maryland)
Catherine Goslin (d. after 1802) m. Daniel Smith (b. before 1764, MD - d. after 1802)
Elizabeth Goslin (1749-1790, NC)
John Goslin (b. 1756, living in Hope 1780) (died in Jones County, NC)
Ezekiel Goslin Jr (1756-1774, NC)
Mary Goslin (d. bef. 1802) m. Young

Second Generation

John Goslin is the only son named in Elizabeth's will. Did he have children who remained in the Forsyth Co. area?

And who were the parents of William Goslin (1763-1851) who married Elizabeth Thorp (1771-1844) in 1790?

Third Generation

Children of William Goslin and Elizabeth Thorp
Mary Goslin (1793-?) m. Robert Blackburn (1790-1842)

Probably there were other children: who were they?

Could the following be one of them?

William Goslin (1807-1888) m. 1) Frances Caroline Stockburger , 2) Martha Malinda Wolff (1812-1888)

Martha and William married in April 1850, so she is not the mother of the four children who appear with them in the 1850 Forsyth Co. census. The will of Sarah Leinbach Stockburger (1868) names children of deceased daughter Frances C. Goslin. We are guessing this is William's first wife. This is supported by two additional wills, that of Johanna Spainhour (1843) which names her "god-child Caroline Goslin (late Stockburger)", and that of Sarah Leinbach Stockburger's sister Barbara Leinbach (1847), which names niece "Caroline Goslin (wife of William Goslin)". We conclude that Frances Caroline probably died between February 1847, the date of this latter will, and William's marriage to Martha in 1850, and we suspect that she is the Frances Goslin 1813-1848, buried Doub's Chapel Methodist.

Fourth Generation

Children of William Goslin and Frances Caroline Stockburger
Junius Waitman Goslin (1840-1896) m. Leonora Jane Spach (1848-1905)

Sarah A.E. Goslin (1844-1930) m. N.G. Whittington (1826-1912)
William Henry Goslin (1846-1924) m. Sarah Hauser (1855-1928)

Child of William Goslin and Martha Malinda Wolff
Martha Malinda Goslin (1852-1926) m. Anderson L. Stipe (1850-1932), s/o William B. Stipe and Martha J. Bodenhamer

Fifth Generation

Children of Junius Waitman Goslin and Leonora Jane Spach
Birdie Goslin (1873-1940) m. Henry Vogler (1869-1930)
William Allen Goslin (1879-1954)
